Affirmations

What is it?

To Affirm: (/əˈfərm/) state as a fact; assert strongly and publicly.

Affirmations are positive statements or self-encouragements that we repeat to ourselves in order to positively influence our thoughts, feelings, and actions. They are intended to help build confidence, combat negative thoughts, and create a desired reality. Affirmations can be written or spoken, and can cover various aspects of life, such as personal relationships, health, career, finances, etc.

Affirmations are words or phrases that we are choosing. Every thought is technically an affirmation, which is why positive affirmations are so important so we can change the negative thoughts and affirm / consciously choose positive ones.

We are constantly using affirmations, without realizing it. Self-talk is a stream of either positive or negative affirmations. For better or worse, our words and thoughts shape our life experiences. Saying positive affirmations strengthens our capacity to bring our desires to life.

Why does it matter?

Affirmations can be a powerful and a life changing tool if used correctly, and if the effort / belief is there. Our thoughts play a huge role in our mood and our reaction to things that happen over the course of each day.

Its not magic, or a secret. Its just science. The use of affirmations can rewire your brain on the cellular level. Two parts of the mind that we are going to focus on is the conscious mind, and the subconscious mind.

The conscious mind is the part of the mind that is aware of and perceives the current thoughts, sensations, and environment. It's responsible for our subjective experience and decision-making and is a very small percentage (5-10%) of where our thoughts come from.

The subconscious mind can impact our decision-making and behavior by shaping our beliefs and attitudes, often without our conscious awareness. This is why it's important to be mindful of the messages and information we feed our subconscious mind.

It's important to be aware of the unconscious loops that your mind is in so you can consciously notice them and break the patterns. This is where affirmations come into play and how they can help improve your overall mental well-being and lead to a more fulfilling life.

There is way more to cover on these topics of the mind and healing that will come in the future, but affirmations are an entry point into understanding how we can consciously flip the script and realize our self talk.

How to connect inwards?

Affirmations are a simple step that you can add into your routine each day. The most powerful affirmations are the ones created by you because in order for it to work, it needs to be something you believe in.

  1. Figure out your limiting beliefs (simply put where are you saying things like “I can’t, I am not, I don’t” or where you overreact and get down on yourself, or where you subconsciously believe you’re not good enough.)

  2. Flip those limiting beliefs you uncover and start affirming to the positive. (Change the negative statement to a positive one - “I am not qualified to get that promotion” to “I am the best candidate and worthy / deserving of that promotion”)

  3. Lastly, Repeat, repeat, repeat, and do it daily!

By speaking, thinking, and writing affirmations, you tap into your subconscious and transform it with new, empowering ideas. Repetition strengthens the intention and bypasses the conscious mind, embedding it directly into the subconscious to form new neural connections in the brain.

Now there are some caveats because the trick is you must believe it to work, but the more you do it the more natural it will become. Affirmations are only one piece of the complex puzzle of the mind, and it isn’t about just being positive all the time — it’s about realizing how you speak to yourself and healing what triggers you through mindset.
