“I don’t want to be at the mercy of my emotions. I want to use them, to enjoy them, and to dominate them.”

-Oscar Wilde

Gaining Control Over Your Emotions

Fear and worry are powerful emotions that, when left unchecked, can take over and cloud our decision-making, especially in uncertain situations.

However, when we understand what fear and worry really are—emotional responses rooted in our mind's desire for control and safety—we can take steps to keep them from running the show.

Worry is an emotional response to uncertainty, where the mind tries to predict and prepare for negative outcomes. While worry can help us identify things we can act on, it often becomes unproductive when it fixates on things beyond our control. Instead of solving problems, worry puts us in a cycle of stress and anxiety, pulling us away from the present moment and making us feel powerless. Recognizing worry as a mental habit helps us refocus on what we can control and address our concerns in healthier ways.

Fear is a primal response to perceived threats, triggering the body’s fight-or-flight mode. While fear protects us from immediate danger, in modern life it’s often triggered by imagined scenarios or uncertainties. This psychological fear can cloud our thinking and keep us stuck in avoidance. When we understand that fear is an emotional response, not necessarily a reflection of reality, we can face it head-on, using it as an opportunity for growth instead of letting it hold us back.

As it relates to today being the election, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by fear and worry about potential outcomes. The media are the kings and queens of amplifying these emotions, pushing us into a reactive state where we feel like everything is at stake.

But here’s where understanding the nature of fear and worry can help:

1. Recognize the Emotion: Acknowledge when fear or worry is creeping in. Simply recognizing that these emotions are taking over helps you take a step back.

2. Focus on What You Can Control: Worry often stems from focusing on things beyond your control. Shift your attention to what you can control. Taking action in these areas gives you a sense of empowerment.

3. Plan for Best and Worst-Case Scenarios: One of the best ways to counteract worry and fear is to make a plan so you can feel prepared. What would happen in the best-case scenario? What would happen in the worst? Preparing mentally for different outcomes gives you a sense of control over how you’ll respond, no matter what happens. This way, fear doesn’t dictate your behavior—you do.

4. Stay Present: Fear and worry pull us into an imagined future where everything seems uncertain and threatening. Bring yourself back to the present moment. Focus on what’s happening right now in your life and make choices from a place of clarity rather than fear-driven anxiety.

5. Challenge Fear-Based Narratives: Whether it’s election coverage, social media, or everyday life, fear-based messaging is designed to make you feel reactive and small. When you recognize that this is happening, you can choose to challenge those narratives. Remind yourself that you are in control of your reactions and your actions, and you don’t have to let fear push you into a place of panic or helplessness.

In general life, these same principles apply. Whether it’s career decisions, personal challenges, or relationships, fear and worry often arise when we feel uncertain or out of control. By recognizing these emotions, focusing on what you can control, and planning for outcomes with a clear mind, you can prevent fear from running your life.

Ultimately, you get to decide how much power fear and worry have. By taking ownership of your thoughts, actions, and emotional responses, you ensure that YOU—not fear—are leading the way.

I know this is a sensitive time, but what makes this country beautiful is the right to vote, to choose for yourself, to have the opinions and values you hold and vote accordingly. It’s a privilege that allows us to express our individuality and contribute to the collective voice of our community. Let’s practice love and kindness; it is up to us to unify, regardless of differing views.

It’s essential to recognize that fear activates our fight-or-flight response, which can turn off our logical brain and heighten emotions. This reaction not only clouds our judgment but can also lead to increased conflict and division. That’s why getting out of these states is even more crucial during this time. We have the power to engage in respectful dialogue and foster understanding among one another.

Honor yourself by diving deep into learning—not just about the election, but in every aspect of your life. Make your own decisions rooted in knowledge and compassion. Remember, don’t let fear and worry take the reins; it all comes back to YOU. You have the power to shape your journey and make choices that resonate with your true self.

With love and gratitude,

Stephanie
