Toxic Candles

What is it?

Candles are a symbol of warmth, relaxation, and tranquility. It’s a simple and delightful way to set the mood and make the place smell wonderful. However, not all candles are as innocent as they seem. Many conventional candles on the market today contain toxic ingredients that can adversely affect our health and indoor air quality.

Just like certain beauty products, candles being perfume for the home can contain harmful chemicals that impact us. Research referenced by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has detected harmful chemicals in some candles, raising concerns about potential health hazards.

Conventional candles are commonly made from paraffin wax which pose serious health risks due to the release of dangerous Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) when burned. These VOCs include formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, toluene, benzene, and acetone, which can disrupt hormones and act as neurotoxins and carcinogens.

Additionally, burning paraffin wax generates ultrafine soot and particulate matter that can enter the lungs and bloodstream, potentially leading to health issues like allergies, asthma, bronchitis, strokes, and even cancer. Some conventional candles may still contain lead or have wicks made of zinc and tin, releasing trace amounts of heavy metals, which can be harmful to our health when inhaled over prolonged periods.

Why does it matter?

These are the waxes to avoid due to their potential harmful effects:

  1. Paraffin Wax: Paraffin is a by-product of petroleum refining, and candles made from paraffin wax can emit harmful chemicals when burned. These candles may release toxins like benzene and toluene, which are known carcinogens and air pollutants.

  2. Gel Wax: Gel wax is not a natural substance and is typically a blend of mineral oil and polymer resins. These candles may contain additives that release harmful chemicals when burned.

  3. Synthetic Blends: Avoid candles made from unknown or synthetic wax blends, as they may contain undisclosed chemicals that could be harmful.

While candles can add a pleasant ambiance to a room, it's essential to be aware of their potential risks.

  1. Air Pollution: Paraffin or other petroleum-based waxes can release harmful chemicals into the air, including benzene and toluene.

  2. Soot Inhalation: Candles with lead-core wicks or low-quality materials can produce excessive soot when burned. Inhaling soot particles can irritate the lungs and airways and may worsen existing respiratory conditions.

  3. Allergies and Sensitivities: Candles with artificial fragrances and dyes can trigger allergies or sensitivities, leading to symptoms such as headaches, nausea, or skin irritations.

  4. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs): Some candles emit VOCs when burned, which can contribute to indoor air pollution. Long-term exposure to VOCs may cause various health issues, including respiratory problems and neurological effects.

  5. Endocrine Disruption: Certain candle materials, like phthalates commonly found in fragrance oils, have been linked to endocrine disruption, affecting hormone balance in the body.

  6. Asthma Aggravation: Individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions may find that burning candles exacerbates their symptoms, leading to difficulty breathing or asthma attacks.

  7. Artificial Fragrances: Scented candles often contain artificial fragrances and dyes. Some of these chemicals can trigger allergic reactions or cause respiratory problems, especially in individuals with sensitivities or allergies.

How to remove from your life?

When shopping for non-toxic and natural candles, consider the type of wax, the wick used (cotton, wood, paper), and the fragrance type (natural, synthetic, or a mix). Candles offer a range of scents, from essential oils to safe synthetic fragrances. Some candles blend natural fragrances with safe synthetics for a balanced fragrance experience, while others remain 100% organic with essential oils.

Here are the safer non-toxic waxes to look for:

  1. Soy Wax: Made from soybean oil, soy wax is a popular choice for eco-conscious consumers. It burns cleanly and slowly, releasing minimal soot and emissions. Soy wax candles are often biodegradable and derived from a renewable resource.

  2. Beeswax: Beeswax is a natural wax produced by bees. It has a beautiful honey-like scent and a clean burn, emitting negative ions that can help purify the air. Beeswax candles are a sustainable option and do not release harmful chemicals when burned.

  3. Coconut Wax: Coconut wax is made from the oil of coconuts and is another eco-friendly alternative. It burns cleanly and has a natural, subtle fragrance. Coconut wax candles are also biodegradable and produced from a sustainable source.

  4. Hemp Wax: Hemp wax is a newer option and is made from hemp oil, which is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant. Hemp wax is environmentally friendly and produces a clean, slow burn.

You can find these as 100% of one kind of wax above, or some companies use a blend of the non-toxic waxes to create a perfect harmony of each of their qualities. Make sure you are using trusted brands for blended waxes because they can label their ingredients in misleading ways. Phrases like "100% soy wax blend" might disguise a mere 1% soy and 99% paraffin. To ensure transparency you can always reach out to the company for an exact ingredients list and sourcing information.

To minimize potential health risks when using candles:

  • Trim candle wicks regularly to prevent excessive soot production.

  • Burn candles in well-ventilated areas to reduce indoor air pollution.

  • Check the label for the recommended burn time, typically around 3 hours.
